A taxi driver was arrested in Bangkok’s Watthana district after handing cash and valuables estimated at 50 to a drunk French man who fell asleep in his taxi. 000 baht stolen.
A police team led by Pol Col Phudit Boonyaritthichaikit, deputy chief investigator at Thong Lor Police Station, arrested the taxi driver, identified only as Torsak, 49, outside a hotel in the Khlong Toei Nuea area on Thursday.
The arrest came after Manuel Boyer, 32, a French citizen who works in the information technology sector, lodged a complaint with Thong Lor police that his Lacoste-branded bag contained a total of 54 euros worth of cash and valuables. 200 baht disappeared. The incident happened in front of a Lawson 108 supermarket on Soi Sukhumvit 22, Thai media reported on Friday.
The popular Facebook page“ Yak Dang Diew Jadhai Return Part 3 ” previously posted a clip that appears to show Mr Boyer on the 23rd. April gets into a taxi in front of the shop around 4 a.m. The post included a message from his girlfriend claiming the taxi driver stole her boyfriend’s bag after he fell asleep drunk, adding that his passport and other belongings were lost in the incident.
After conducting an investigation and gathering evidence, police were able to obtain an arrest warrant for Mr Torsak on charges of theft.
Records show the taxi driver had previously been charged with possession of illegal drugs. A search of his room found the victim’s Lacoste bag, but the suspect said he had sold the stolen iPhone to a shop in Huai Khwang market.
During questioning, Mr Torsak told police he originally intended to wake the passenger but changed his mind after seeing his valuables. He then decided to steal them to sell to fund his own expenses.
The taxi driver was held at Thong Lor Police Station for further trial.
