Thai Alexander Albon hopes for a race seat in 2022: ‘See if there is still room’

As we probably have all probably read, Alexander Albon has been sidelined by Red Bull Racing after a disappointing 2020 season. The Thai driver is now working a lot behind the scenes but hopes to return to the F1 grid soon.

However,…..there are not many chances for Albon to return to the grid in 2022. “There isn’t much,” he told F1.com.

“In some ways, I depend on others who are not performing. It’s the drivers’ market in Formula 1.”

Albon realistically looks back on his own debut in the sport that almost never happened. When Daniel Ricciardo left Red Bull, a spot suddenly became available at Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri) because Pierre Gasly moved on to the main team. That place at Toro Rosso was then for Albon.

Albon says he is pleased with the support he is receiving from team principal Christian Horner and adviser Helmut Marko and expects them to back him up whenever there is a chance for Albon to get a seat. “For now I am mainly focusing on F1, to see if there is still room. And then we’ll see.”

The most serious options for Albon lie with Williams and Alfa Romeo. Both teams have not yet committed drivers for 2022 and the experience plus sponsorship money from Thailand could well help Albon in the market. Still, Albon has an eye on other championships such as Formula E and IndyCar. “You have to assess the landscape and make sure you cover all the options, so it’s tough. Let’s see what happens.”
