A motorist managed to escape just in time when his car drove through a flooded tunnel in the Bua Yai neighbourhood of Nakhon Ratchasima around 3 am on Sunday. The tunnel is near the Chira Junction-Khon Kaen railway line.

“Local residents rushed to help the driver on the spot, although some took the opportunity to catch fish,” the Facebook page “Tee Nee Bua Yai” (Here’s Bua Yai) later announced on social media.

The Facebook page said the tunnel was often underwater because the so-called smart pumps in the area were not working properly, forcing motorists to wait for the water to recede or choose another route.

The State Railways of Thailand, the SRT is said to be aware of this matter but has not yet done anything about it.

The Thai Meteorological Service had previously forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in almost all parts of the country yesterday.

“People need to be prepared for harsh conditions that can cause flash flooding and break riverbanks. They should also be careful during thunderstorms,” the meteorological service had warned.
