Thai government plans to open many provinces to tourism from October

Despite the persistently high corona figures, the government in Thailand wants to open the country to tourism in October. This after the largest islands Phuket and Ko Samui have received fully vaccinated guests again since July, from October 1, the capital Bangkok and the Chonburi province with the popular resort of Pattaya will follow.

The cultural centre Chiang Mai in the north and Prachuap Khiri Khan with the city of Hua Hin, the summer residence of the Thai royal family, would also open.

A further 21 provinces in the kingdom are expected to follow by mid-October, the Bangkok Post newspaper quoted, with the editors citing Tourism Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn. “The government is pushing for its plan to open up these areas,” he said. The condition is that 70 per cent of the people in the affected areas must be fully vaccinated.

However, authorities are confident that the pandemic will improve significantly in October, as significantly more vaccines will be available by then. The important tourism industry has been going on for a year and a half.

The number of infections in the country of 70 million inhabitants is slowly decreasing. Today, authorities reported 14,653 new infections and 271 fatalities in the last 24 hours. In mid-August, the number was still at record levels of more than 22,000 infections.
