Thailand is becoming more cannabis-friendly, and the government is seeking to further loosen laws against the once criminalized plant

In 2022, Thailand’s Ministry of Health will push for the full legalization of all parts of cannabis, removing the last obstacle preventing the widespread use, use and commercialization of this beneficial plant, Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said.

In December 2020, Thailand removed from the narcotic list the parts of cannabis that are low in the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), such as leaves and stems. However, the flowers and buds of the plant remained classified as a Category 5 drug, since these parts of the cannabis are usually rich in THC.

A new Drug Code came into force last week, which no longer includes marijuana on the list of narcotic drugs. Now, in accordance with the law, the Thai Ministry of Health needs to update and submit a revised list of illegal drugs. Only cannabis extracts containing more than 0.2% THC will remain banned.

“Today we have ensured that the stems, roots, leaves and shoots of cannabis are no longer drugs. Starting next year, we will exclude everything from the list of drugs – stems, roots, shoots, leaves, buds, flowers and seeds, ”the Minister of Health assured.

With the entry into force of the new drug list, all hemp products such as oils, soaps, cosmetics and additives, usually containing less than 0.2% THC, can be produced and used completely freely.

“The allowable amount of TCG is not unilaterally established by Thailand, it is the standard of the World Health Organization,” said Anutin.

Last week, the Minister of Health launched the Cannabis Kickoff on Mekong Bank event. According to Anutin, the purpose of the event is to encourage people to grow and process hemp to supplement their income, which in turn will stimulate the economy and agricultural tourism.

The restriction on the number of cannabis plants allowed in one household will be lifted. The only requirement is to request permission from the authorities before boarding. People have been hit hard by the pandemic and the cannabis-growing initiative will help them, the minister added.
