Thailand is postponing the introduction of the 300 baht tourist fee until the end of the year, Thailand Pass is expected to be cancelled from July 1

The tourist fee for visitors arriving in Thailand by land transport will also be revised, the Bangkok Post reported citing a statement from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand.

“Charging tourists arriving by land requires further study, for example, to determine whether the fee should be less than 300 baht since the average length of stay of such tourists is only 1-2 nights,” said the Minister of Tourism and Sports Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.

Thailand’s tourist levy was previously on the agenda of this week’s cabinet meeting, but the ministry withdrew the proposal to deal with the land-based entry fee.

The minister said he plans to resubmit the proposal to the cabinet within two months and the levy will begin 90 days after publication in the Royal Gazette. The start date for the tourist levy will be moved to the last quarter of this year or the first quarter of 2023, Phiphat explained.

The ministry will also propose that the Covid-19 Situation Center cease registration in the Thailand Pass system for foreign visitors entering Thailand starting July 1.

“Abolishing the Thailand Pass system means tourists will no longer have to buy travel insurance, which should help make travel to Thailand more convenient,” the minister said.

Meanwhile, Yutasak Supasorn, head of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said the agency has prepared a plan to boost domestic tourism through the expansion of the “We Travel Together” hotel subsidy scheme. The scheme will pay for 1.5 million nights of accommodation financed by budget balances. The system will be ready by July 1, and local tourists will be able to travel from July 8 to October 31.

Phuket is hosting the Thailand Travel Mart Plus 2022, the first international travel trade show in more than two years, from June 8 to 10. The event features 264 local companies, of which 229 are hoteliers, and 276 international companies from 45 countries, of which 45.7% are participating for the first time.
