Thailand’s e-cigarette ban has been confirmed by Thai Tobacco Commission

Health Ministry Secretary Kiattiphum Wongrajit said Health Ministry Secretary confirmed Thailand’s ban on the import and sale of e-cigarettes (vapes) during a meeting of the Thai Tobacco Commission held this week.

Members agreed that Thailand, as a signatory to the World Health Organization Convention on Tobacco Control, should maintain the ban to prevent cigarette addiction in children, adolescents and non-smoking adults, said Kiattiphum, who chaired the meeting. “The ban will also help protect non-smokers from health risks posed by e-cigarettes and other tobacco-related products,” the secretary said.

E-cigarettes invite people to use traditional cigarettes and contain addictive nicotine,” he added. “In addition, studies show that using e-cigarettes does not help you to quit smoking, so legalizing tobacco control in Thailand would lag behind and endanger children and adolescents.”

The committee will send its resolution to the cabinet and urge the relevant authorities to strictly enforce the Tobacco Control Act.

E-cigarettes and vaping remain popular in Thailand despite the ban, Dr Grandpa Karnkawinpong, head of the disease control department.

“In 2021, 78,742 Thais were caught smoking e-cigarettes,” said Dr. Grandpa. Nearly a third of these, or 24,050, were young people between the ages of 15 and 24, he added.
