The government spokesman, Mrs. traisulee Traisoranakul, has announced that the Thai cabinet has extended the nationwide state of emergency for another two months until September 30.

The emergency has been extended to address rising Covid-19 infections, with 288,643 cases reported between April 1 and July 9.

The pandemic is centred in Bangkok and surrounding provinces, where cases are now increasing by thousands a day with dozens of fatalities every 24 hours.

Thailand registered 13002 new cases and 107 deaths today. Greater Bangkok, including surrounding provinces, registered more than 6,000 new cases.

The health ministry warned that unless stricter restrictions are imposed, the current daily intake of more than 10,000 new infections could generate more than 100,000 new cases in the next two weeks.

This would bring Thailand’s public health system to the point of collapse, it said. The state of emergency allows authorities to impose special measures to curb the spread of Covid-19.
