Thais take precedence over expats – no plan to give free vaccines to foreigners

Thai people will always get priority for COVID19 vaccines, the Ministry of Health said yesterday, and reports denied that some ex-pats living in the kingdom would also be allowed to register for free vaccines.

The ministry stated that while the government wanted to take care of everyone living here, it had no intention of giving free vaccines to ex-pats due to very limited vaccine supplies, so Thai people would be the first to get it.

“The vaccines are currently only reserved for Thai people who are now at high risk or living in areas with serious outbreaks,” said spokesman Rungrueng Kitphati.

“They, [the ex-pats] have to wait for a clear policy from the government.

In the future, the country will provide more alternatives to vaccines so they can stand a chance of getting it.

“Please don’t worry”

“There will be a surplus of vaccines soon, so getting them won’t be difficult.”

On Monday, some ex-pats announced on social media that they had successfully signed up to get the vaccine through the Mor Prom Line application.

@joecummings wrote on Twitter that he had booked for his vaccination at McCormick Hospital in Chiang Mai in June.

The ministry responded (too quickly) by stating the government had plans to give free injections to foreigners over 60 with underlying health problems in June and July.

So far, 1.498 million people have been vaccinated in priority groups, including public health officials, frontline workers and people in high-risk areas.
