The colour dark red hits the tourist industry of Chonburi like a sledgehammer

Khun Boonanan Phattanasin, the president of the Pattaya Business and Tourism Association, foresees that the designation of Chonburi province with the city of Pattaya as a dark red control zone will massively affect all types of companies.

About 90 per cent of the 1,000 hotels in Pattaya have few to no bookings. The government must take action and support business people financially.

Help is especially needed for the workers because with the strict restrictions to contain Covid-19, many workers in the service sector are losing their jobs. Access to the hotels is limited, restaurants may only open for takeaways and delivery services.

Boonanan adds that infections have not been traced to workers in the local tourism industry since the third wave of the virus began in early April.

Yesterday morning, the Chonburi Provincial Health Department reported 89 new Covid19 infections.

Of these, 53 were infections in the Banglamung district with the city of Pattaya. In total, health authorities have confirmed 2,611 cases since the beginning of April.
