The hecatomb on Thailand’s roads has claimed 8,773 fatalities so far this year, 562 fewer than last year

The Thai newspaper “Daily News” has rejoined to continue their campaign to raise awareness of the dangers on Thai roads, along with their reporting of “on the spot” traffic accident statistics.

Citing statistics from Dr. Thaejing Siriphanich of the Drunk Driving Foundation, the Daily News published the following figures for deaths:

In 2019 there were 14,907 fatalities, in 2020 there were 14,825 and this year from January 1 to September 2 there were 8,773.

In the same period last year, there were 9,335 – 562 more deaths.

In the first two days of September, 51 people had died in Thailand. One was a motorcyclist in Phattalung in southern Thailand – a case the media used as a warning against overtaking.

News outlets pointed out that the above deaths apply to people who died on the spot and not those who died in or on the way to the hospital.

Every year, an estimated 25,000 people are killed on Thai roads, 70-80% of them motorcyclists.
