The provincial court has sentenced Gisyeren to death a 56-year-old serial killer known as the “Jack the Ripper” of Thailand.

Somkid Phumphuang was convicted in 2005 of the murder of five women, including a singer and four masseuses. He had sex with the women before killing them by strangling or drowning them. He fled with the valuables of his victims.

Somkid was initially sentenced to life imprisonment, but his sentence was reduced for confessing to murdering the women. The Department of Corrections even named him a model prisoner, and he was released on parole in May 2019.

Seven months later, Somkid strangled a 51-year-old woman in Khon Kaen. The woman’s body was found in her home with clear adhesive tape tied around her neck and ankles to a phone charger.

Somkid was arrested again in December, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, who ordered the justice minister to re-arrest Thai sentence reduction rules to review the case, especially for convicted murderers.
