Tired 73-year-old Thai man due to covid infection gives up and hangs himself

Nonthaburi police were alerted to a suicide around noon yesterday afternoon in a flat in Bang Bua Thong district and found the body of 73-year-old Chao Singto hanging from a window.

The deceased’s 38-year-old son, Charlie, said his father called him on July 15 to say he was feeling sick and wanted something to eat.

“The next day my father went to a hospital for a check-up and heard that he had contracted the Covid virus,” he said. “I called the authorities to send an ambulance but they said they would send one as soon as a bed becomes available.

He called me last Wednesday night and said he was feeling very tired and could barely breathe. I told him to wait a little longer and help would arrive.”

Meanwhile, Mrs Parisa Phuwanatsuphakit, a health volunteer in Bang Bua Thong, that Chao worked as a security guard in the flat, where he also lived.

“Once he tested positive, we put his name on the waiting list for a bed at the nearest field hospital. However, the hospital was full and had no beds available for new patients,” she said.

“All we could do was bring him three meals a day, until Thursday, when I noticed he hadn’t picked up the food I left at the door in the morning. So I had the door opened by another guard and saw Chao hanging by the window.”

Nonthaburi reported 416 new cases yesterday with 17,781 cases added up since April 1. It ranks fourth among the provinces with the highest total infections after Bangkok, Samut Prakan and Samut Sakhon.
