A 43-year-old Israeli woman, Fidaa Kiwan, was sentenced to death in Dubai on Tuesday after drugs were found in her home. Authorities discovered half a kilo of cocaine in her apartment.

According to The Times of Israel, the woman is known in Dubai as a photographer and runs her own photo studio. She came to Dubai a year ago at the invitation of a Palestinian acquaintance but was arrested not much later.

On March 17, 2021, a search of her apartment took place. The police arrested Kiwan the same day because half a kilo of cocaine was found. The woman claimed that the drugs were not hers, but could not prove this, according to authorities in Dubai.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that it will intervene in the case. In collaboration with the woman’s lawyer, the conviction will be challenged by means of an appeal. Experts with knowledge of the case told The Times of Israel that they expect the sentence to be reduced to a long prison term on appeal.

The United Arab Emirates is known for its strict anti-drug laws, they say, with those convicted of drug trafficking facing a possible death penalty. However, in many cases, these sentences are often imposed to alert public opinion to the strict rules within the Emirates and are eventually regularly commuted to heavy prison terms.
