The United States has killed Ayman Al-Zawahiri, leader of the terrorist group Al Qaeda, in a drone strike in Afghanistan. Al-Zawahiri (pictured right) and Osama Bin Laden (pictured left) planned the September 11, 2001 attacks. He also claimed responsibility for the 2005 London bombing.

“For decades, he masterminded attacks on Americans,” US President Biden said in a news conference. “But the terrorist leader is no more.” Al-Zawahiri had been on the run since the 9/11 attacks, and after bin Laden’s death in 2011, he became the leader of Al Qaeda.

In addition to the 9/11 attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people, the Americans also accuse him of being involved in the 1998 bombings of the US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya. Al Zawahiri also claimed responsibility for the bombing in the London public transport in 2005, killing 52 people.

Biden said US intelligence agencies tracked down Al-Zawahiri earlier this year. “I authorized a precision attack that would remove him from the battlefield once and for all ,” the US president said, stressing that there were no civilian casualties in the attack.
