Will Smith will be banned from the Oscars and all other Academy activities for the next 10 years, Variety writes. The reason for this is the blow he dealt to comedian Chris Rock during the 94th edition of the Oscars last month.

“The 94th Oscars were intended to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who have done an incredible job over the past year,” the Academy wrote in a statement viewed by Variety. “However, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behaviour we saw Mr Smith display on stage.”

The Academy also writes that they themselves did not act correctly after the blow was dealt. The ceremony went on as usual and Smith was even allowed to receive his prize and give a speech. “We apologize for that,” the Academy said, thanking Chris Rock in the statement for the calm he maintained after the incident.

Will Smith, through CNN reporter Brian Stelter, provided an initial response to the ban: “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.”
