Jada Pinkett Smith says in an exclusive interview with People that she and Will Smith are still married but have actually been separated for seven years. She also talks about her mental health and speaks out for the first time about the famous punch her husband dealt during the Oscars last year.
Jada Pinkett Smith married Will Smith in 1997 when she was pregnant with her first child Jaden. During the time she met him, she was treated for depression and suicide glorification with medication. “When I met Will, I completely ignored my mental health. I was so high on my crush and our dynamic. I honestly thought I was healed. He became my medicine,” she says. Jada stopped taking her medication.
Around the age of 40, she became seriously depressed and suicidal again. She says her son Jaden saved her life. “I’ve learned how to level up with each of my kids and understand their superpowers. When Jaden came to me and said, ‘Mom, you need to hear this. My friend’s dad did something. You need to come here and hear this. It opened up a whole new world of healing and healing for me, which I’m so grateful for.” Jaden’s boyfriend’s father had used Aayahuasca, a hallucinogenic drug that seems to help many people cope with trauma. “Ayahuasca helped me and gave me a new intimate relationship with myself that I never had before. The thoughts of suicide all went away.”
Will and Jada had seen each other a few times, but when Will divorced his first wife, he called Jada and asked, ” Who are you dating?” When Jada replied that she was single, Will said, “Not anymore. Now you’re with me.” She adds with a laugh that she can’t believe she fell for it at the time.
Twenty-six years of marriage and three children (she calls Trey from Will’s first marriage her bonus child), Jada says they still love each other dearly and are looking at how they will shape that love in the future. At the time of the famous Oscars blow in 2022, Will and Jada have not been together for six years, Jada says.
Of the Oscars blowout, she says, “I thought it was fake.” Like many others who saw it happen on live television, she couldn’t believe her own eyes. “I thought, ‘There’s no way Will actually hit him.’ It wasn’t until he started walking back to his seat that I realized it wasn’t played.” The first words she said to him when they were alone after the show were, “Are you okay?” The actress says she will always stand by Will but also give him the opportunity to figure out how to move forward.
